Make Glow Sticks – The Science

August 16, 2010 · Filed Under Science Videos · Comment

We show how to make glow sticks and go through all the chemicals needed as well as how to make different colors. We also talk about the chemistry and scientifically research a proposed mechanism. To make the glow stick mix together the following: 10mL Diethyl Phthalate (solvent) 3mg of fluorescent dye (see below) 50mg TCPO (see below) 100mg sodium acetate 3mL 30% hydrogen peroxide (add last to start reaction) The fluorescent dye can be 9,10-bis(phenylethynyl)anthracene for green, Rubrene for yellow, 9,10-diphenylanthracene for blue, and rhodamine B for red. TCPO is expensive to buy but can be made for much cheaper by following the directions in our previous video: www.youtube.com The chemicals, including the ones to make TCPO were purchased from alfa aesar: www.alfa.com The Rhodamine B and Rubrene dyes were instead purchased from sigma Aldrich www.sigmaaldrich.com The dyes and TCPO are carcinogenic and gloves should be worn when handling them. The TCPO and sodium acetate amounts can be varied considerably and still obtain good light. Smaller quantities tend to be dimmer and decay faster, while larger quantities last longer. For those of you higher level individuals that actually do want to know the mechanism for this process, please refer to this article: pubs.acs.org

mp3: symphonyofscience.com “The Case for Mars” is the sixth installment in the Symphony of Science music video series. It features Robert Zubrin, Carl Sagan, Brian Cox, and Penelope Boston. Samples come from the documentary “The Mars Underground”, Cosmos, and Wonders of the Solar System. The video is intended to pique curiosity about the planet Mars and to promote human exploration of it. More science music videos can be found at http Enjoy! ~John Lyrics: [Robert Zubrin] Mars is the next logical step In our space program It’s the challenge that’s been staring us in the face For the past 30 years It has water, it has carbon, It has a 24 hour day It has geothermal energy Mars is a place we can settle [Carl Sagan] There is a giant rift in its surface 5000 kilometers long There is a volcano as wide as Arizona [Zubrin] So there’s the choice in life One either grows or one decays Grow or die I think we should grow [Sagan] Mars is a world of wonders [Brian Cox] It has canyons, river valleys, and giant ice sheets [Sagan] Mars is a world of wonders [Zubrin] It shouldn’t be humans to Mars in 50 years It should be humans to Mars in 10 We either muster the courage to go Or we risk the possibility of stagnation and decay We’ve got cosmic radiation Zero gravity Martian dust storms Back contamination But these are dragons that we can take on [Sagan] In our time we have sifted The sands of Mars Established a presence there And fulfilled a century of dreams [Cox] The Mars rovers have

Symphony of Science – ‘The Unbroken Thread’ (ft. Attenborough, Goodall, Sagan)

MP3: symphonyofscience.com “The Unbroken Thread” is the fourth video in the Symphony of Science series, and it features David Attenborough, Jane Goodall, and Carl Sagan. The clips used in this installment come from Carl Sagan’s Cosmos, David Attenborough’s Charles Darwin and the Tree of Life, The Life of Mammals, The Living Planet, BBC Life, XVIVO Scientific Animations, IMAX Cosmic Voyage, Jane Goodall’s TED Talk, and a clever Guiness Commercial. The themes present in The Unbroken Thread attempt to explore the wild diversity of life on our planet, the intricacy and origin of its mechanisms, and its close relation to all other life forms. John john@symphonyofscience.com Lyrics [David Attenborough] All life is related And it enables us to construct with confidence The complex tree that represents the history of life Our planet, the Earth, is as far as we know Unique in the universe; it contains life Here plants and animals proliferate in such numbers That we still have not even named all the different species Darwin’s great insight revolutionized the way in which we see the world We now understand why there are so many different species [Carl Sagan] Every cell is a triumph of natural selection And we’re made of trillions of cells (Within us is a little universe) Those are some of the things that

Time Warp – Discovery Channel – Soap Bubbles Science with Keith Johnson of BubbleArtist.com

Many thanks to Jeff & the whole Time Warp crew. Especially those in post production… with 13 hours of footage, they could have mashed together a nasty blooper reel. Instead they featured the science of bubbles, how bubbles work and the amazing things we can do with them. That is exactly what my touring show for schools, museums, festivals… THE SECRET WORLD OF soap BUBBLES is all about. This was a blast to shoot.
